Research Centre: business writing research

At Emphasis, we aren’t just interested in training our clients to write more clearly and succinctly or helping them to write a great speech or sales proposal. Our work begs bigger questions – about our language, communication and the nation’s ability to write well.

For example, is the way writing is taught in schools and universities ill-adapted for the workplace? How much can the words used by journalists really influence actual events? What effect can the flow of information have on efficiency in the workplace?

Writing skills research for the real world

These are just some of the questions we want to find answers to through our professional writing research.

Whether it’s looking into the quality of university students’ writing skills or asking questions about our clients’ previous experiences of ‘learning’ to write, our research on writing skills aims to challenge misconceptions and encourage a different – and more rounded  –  attitude towards the development of writing skills in teaching, business and society in general.
